As my finger was beginning to heal now, my doctor had, with some cautions, given me permission to go back to doing yoga. I was glad about that—not so much because I had missed the practice but because I was hoping to fill up one or two empty evenings by going. During my first session after the forced break I noticed that, in my absence, the exercises had become even more extreme. Sometimes I had the impression Rocket actually wanted us to sprain our joints. The master himself seemed agitated and irritable. While we were doing the locust, he strode down the rows of yoga mats, nervously snapping his fingers. When he had reached the back of the room, he came upon Dany. Something about the way she was doing the posture seemed to be bothering him. He impatiently grabbed her right shoulder and wrenched it back. Dany let out a clearly audible moan.

“Ow, you’re hurting me!”

“You’re not doing it right. You need to open the chakra!”

He pulled on her shoulder once again, even harder this time. Dany whimpered. Several of the other students looked over at Rocket in irritation. One woman who was wearing dental braces and looked kind of prim spoke up on our behalf.

“Hey, leave her alone.”

For a moment, a haunted silence came over the group. No one dared speak. The woman with the braces looked over at Rocket angrily. At first it seemed like he was going to ignore her comment. Then he abruptly let go of Dany and barked, “Alright, folks, we’re doing the warrior pose, let’s go!”

I didn’t see Dany again that evening. She probably left the studio early, slipping out through the door that led to Rocket’s apartment.
